Spotlight on Creekside Place

Creekside Placewas developed in response to Chico’s pressing need for affordable senior housing, exacerbated by the Camp Fire and the rising cost of living. Nearly 86 percent of current residents previously lived in Butte County, with many being Camp Fire survivors. Another 10 percent came from nearby counties including Glenn, Tehama, and Shasta, and only a handful relocated from further away.

“Housing projects like Creekside Place play a critical role in addressing Chico’s need for affordable housing. This project is a great example of how smart planning and investment in housing can enhance our city’s livability and long-term growth," said Brendan Vieg. Director of Community Development for the City of Chico.

The Creekside Place Apartments were made possible through funding from the City of Chico’s CDBG and HOME funding, as well as the City’s Affordable Housing Fund, State of California and Butte County’s No Place Like Homeprogram funds, and Disaster Recovery low-income housing tax credits. The project also includes 100 project-based housing vouchers through the Housing Authority of the Couty of Butte. It represents a collaborative effort between the City and the Community Housing Improvement Program (CHIP) to create a long-lasting asset for the community.

Resident services are crucial to Creekside Place’s mission of creating a supportive and stable environment for its tenants. Financial contributions are always welcomed to help fund programs, purchase household goods, and maintain services, including:

Coffee hour
Chair yoga classes
A thriving community garden with composting and food-growing opportunities
A community kitchen and regular coffee hours
Social events and workshops, such as a Catalyst Domestic Violence healthy relationships class

These programs are supported by CalFresh nutrition classes, North Valley Catholic Social Services, University of California Cooperative Extension, Butte County Department of Employment and Social Services, and Adult Protective Services.

Members of the Creekside Place community can also get involved by volunteering or teaching classes to enrich residents’ lives.
