On August 18, 2026, the Chico City Council approved an ordinance establishing designated Entertainment Zones in Downtown Chico and Meriam Park. Entertainment Zones are areas where bars, restaurants, wineries, and breweries can sell alcoholic drinks to-go during certain hours. People can enjoy their beverages within the Entertainment Zone boundaries while supporting local businesses in the area. What is an Entertainment Zone?
An Entertainment Zone is a designated public area where adults age 21 and older may possess and consume certain alcoholic beverages purchased from participating licensed businesses located within the zone.
Where are Chico's Entertainment Zones?
Chico has established two Entertainment Zones
- Downtown Chico Entertainment Zone
- Meriam Park Entertainment Zone

When are the Entertainment Zones open?
The Entertainment Zones operate seven days a week. Alcohol consumption within the zones is permitted between 10:00 AM and 10:00 PM.
Who can participate?
Participation is open to
- Patrons aged 21 and over with valis ID.
- Licensed businesses within the zone that have obtained the required city and state approvals to serve alcoholic beverages to-go for consumption within the zone.
Participants must obtain and display a wristband from a participating business in order to participate in the Entertainment Zone.
Are children allowed in the Entertainment Zone?
The Entertainment Zone is a public area. The age requirement within the Entertainment Zone applies to people possessing alcoholic beverages; however, individual businesses within the Entertainment Zone may have their own lawful age restrictions or conditions of entry.
Can I bring my own alcohol into the Zone?
No. Only drinks purchased from authorized businesses within the Entertainment Zone are permitted. Outside alcohol, including beverages brought from home or other establishments, is strictly prohibited.
Can I use my own cup or container?
No. Alcholic beverages served within the Entertainment Zone must be served in approved, clearly marked plastic cups provided by the participating business. Each container must display the official Entertainment Zone logo or mark to show compliance.
Can I take my drink outside the Entertainment Zone?
The boundaries of each Entertainment Zone will be marked with visible signage notifying the public that alcoholic beverages may not be carried beyond the zone boundaries. If you leave the Entertainment Zone, you may not take an Entertainment Zone alcoholic beverage with you.
What about safety and enforcement?
All existing state and local laws remain in effect. Public intoxication, underage drinking, and drinking and driving are strictly prohibited. Law enforcment and City staff will monitor compliance to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
Businesses or individuals that violate zone regluations may face fines or loss of participation priveleges.
How will I know if I'm inside the Zone?
The Entertainment Zone boundaries will be clearly marked with signage, street decals, and maps posted throughout the zone. Participating businesses will also display a participation poster on their business. Boundary maps of the entertainment zones are available.
What should I do to be a responsible visitor?
- Know your limits and drink responsibly
- Keep your beverage in the approved container
- Stay within the posted Entertainment Zone boundaries
- Dispose of cups properly in provided recycling or trash bins
- Be courteous to other visitors, local businesses, and residents
Why did Chico establish Entertainment Zones?
Entertainment Zones are intended to support local businesses, increase pedestrian activity, enhance community gathering spaces, support community events, and contribute to the economic vitality of Downtown Chico and Meriam Park. Entertainment Zones are a tool used to activate commercial districts and encourage residents and visitors to spend time exploring local businesses.
